Etsy AI Disclosure Policy 2026: What Changed, Who's at Risk, How to Comply

On January 14, 2026 Etsy began enforcing a new policy that requires sellers to disclose generative AI in their listings. In Q1 2026 alone Etsy removed approximately 12,000 listings and issued around 8,500 warnings for missing or incorrect disclosure. Many of those sellers did not know the policy existed.

This is the policy in plain English, who is at risk, what counts as AI generative use, and how to stay compliant without removing your listings or losing rank in Etsy search.

What the policy actually says

Etsy’s January 2026 update changed two things at once:

  1. The disclosure requirement. If you used generative AI tools in a listing (image, description, mockup, design, anything that meaningfully shaped the final output), you must mark the listing as using AI and you must change the attribution from “Made by [seller]” to “Designed by [seller].”
  2. The Creativity Standards refresh. Etsy tightened what counts as “handmade by you.” Items that use computerized tools (Cricut, Glowforge, 3D printers) must use your own original design, not a purchased Cricut / 3D template. Resold mass-produced items remain banned. Some natural items that used to be allowed (certain feathers, shells, wood blanks) are now restricted.

Read in combination, the rules push sellers toward either (a) fully handmade with no AI, fully disclosed, or (b) AI-assisted with the new “Designed by” attribution and the AI flag turned on. The grey area in between is where removals are happening.

What “using generative AI” actually means

Etsy’s policy is broader than many sellers realize. Per the Q1 2026 enforcement data, listings have been removed for all of these:

  • Listing images generated by Midjourney, ChatGPT image tools, DALL·E, etc., even when the seller designed the original concept.
  • Background-removed and AI-enhanced product photos where the AI changed more than a clean background swap (added shadows, regenerated parts of the product, replaced the surface).
  • Listing descriptions written by ChatGPT or any LLM without disclosure.
  • Product mockups generated from text prompts (typography mockups, t-shirt printing mockups, mug placement mockups).
  • Patterns, SVGs, and digital downloads where the design was AI-generated.

What is not considered “using generative AI” for disclosure purposes (based on Etsy’s own examples):

  • Simple background removal that doesn’t add or generate new content.
  • Color and lighting correction.
  • Cropping and resizing.
  • Spell-check, grammar-check, and translation that does not rewrite for tone.
  • Search tag suggestions from Etsy’s own native tools.

If you used AI for anything in the first list, the listing requires disclosure.

Who is most at risk

Etsy’s Q1 2026 enforcement data showed three groups taking most of the removals and warnings:

  1. POD (print-on-demand) sellers using AI-generated artwork — t-shirts, mugs, posters, stickers, prints. Especially those whose entire catalog is AI-generated and undisclosed.
  2. Pattern and digital download sellers — knitting / crochet / sewing patterns, SVGs, planners, printables — where the visual was AI-generated.
  3. Sellers using ChatGPT-written descriptions at scale, where the tone is recognizably AI and the seller did not disclose.

Buyer-side anger amplified the enforcement. r/Etsy threads with thousands of upvotes in Q1 2026 documented buyers framing AI memorial portraits of dead pets, AI calendar art mistaken for original drawings, and AI listings described as “handmade.” Etsy responded by upweighting reports and tightening takedown windows.

The compliance checklist (do this, in order)

Run this checklist against every listing in your shop today. It takes about 30 seconds per listing once you have the routine.

1. Identify AI use in the listing

  • Did you use AI for the cover image or any product photo?
  • Did you use AI for the product description or part of it?
  • Did you use AI to generate the design, pattern, or template?
  • Did you use AI to generate mockups (typography, placement, etc.)?

If you answered yes to any of these, the listing needs disclosure.

2. Update the production attribution

In the listing’s Production section, change “Made by [you]” to “Designed by [you]”. This is the new Etsy convention for AI-assisted work. “Made by” remains accurate only when you personally hand-made every visual asset in the listing without AI involvement.

3. Check the AI generative technology flag

In the listing editor, scroll to the About this listing section and find the toggle / checkbox for “This listing uses AI generative technology” (the exact label may vary slightly by category). Turn it on.

4. Add a transparency note to the description

Etsy’s enforcement is more forgiving when the seller is overtly transparent. Add a single sentence near the top of the description such as:

“Designed by me using AI-assisted tools. The concept, prompt direction, and final selection are my work; the visual was generated with AI.”

This is not strictly required if the AI flag is on, but it consistently reduces buyer-complaint takedowns based on the r/Etsy and r/EtsySellers threads tracking the policy in Q1–Q2 2026.

5. Check Creativity Standards compliance

Separately from the AI disclosure, confirm:

  • If you use a Cricut, Glowforge, 3D printer, or any computerized cutter: is the design your own original work? If not, the listing is not eligible regardless of AI status.
  • Are you reselling commercially purchased natural items (feathers, shells, wood blanks) as “handmade”? Many of these are now restricted.

The mistake that doubled removals

A single thread in r/EtsySellers (1qhz7ig, “LESSON LEARNED THE HARD WAY: DON’T LISTEN TO ETSY’S TITLE SUGGESTIONS”) documents a recurring failure mode: sellers asking Etsy’s own native AI for title and category suggestions, then accepting suggestions that violated Etsy’s trademark policy. Etsy then removed the listing for the policy violation — created by Etsy’s own AI.

The lesson: Etsy’s native AI suggestions are not pre-cleared against Etsy’s own policies. Don’t accept them automatically. Read what the AI suggested and reject anything that uses a brand name you don’t own (Disney, Barbie, Stranger Things, Taylor Swift, etc.).

What this means for AI-tool selection

If you use AI tools to generate product photos, listing copy, or designs for Etsy, the tool itself should make disclosure easier, not harder. Specifically the tool should:

  • Tag generated assets with metadata indicating AI generation, so you can prove the disclosure timeline if Etsy asks.
  • Surface the “Designed by” attribution in the asset’s caption or alt text so you don’t forget to update the listing.
  • Show the disclosure copy in the export flow so you can paste it into the listing description.
  • Avoid hallucinating your product in generated video so the asset matches what the buyer actually receives.

Most general-purpose AI tools (Midjourney, ChatGPT image, Photoroom) don’t do any of this. The compliance burden lands entirely on the seller, which is how the 12,000 Q1 removals happened.

ngini Seller Studio is the AI workflow built specifically for sellers, with Etsy AI-disclosure metadata auto-tagged on every generated asset, “Designed by” attribution copy surfaced in the export flow, and image-to-video constrained generation that anchors on your real product photo so the visual doesn’t drift. What about ChatGPT-tone copy and conversion

A separate but related concern from r/EtsySellers (1ap5yud, “Last month I’ve made a change to my listings and now my sales have more than doubled”): even disclosed AI-generated copy can hurt conversion when it reads as ChatGPT-tone. The seller in that thread documented that rewriting his descriptions in his own voice (with AI as a draft layer, not the final output) more than doubled his sales.

Etsy buyers are pattern-matching for AI tone now. Disclosure handles the policy. Voice handles the conversion. Both matter.

Quick FAQ

Will Etsy remove my listing the day I publish AI-generated content? Not the day. Etsy’s enforcement is driven by reports and by periodic policy sweeps. Listings using undisclosed AI typically last weeks before being flagged, then are removed or warned within 48 hours of a report.

Does removing a listing for AI disclosure hurt my shop rank? Yes. Etsy’s search algorithm de-prioritizes shops with policy violations. Multiple removals in a short window can also trigger a shop-wide review.

Can I appeal a removal? Yes, via the Etsy seller dashboard. Appeals that include updated AI disclosure (toggle turned on, “Designed by” attribution, description note) have a substantially higher success rate than appeals that simply contest the AI determination.

Will this policy get stricter or relax? Based on Etsy’s public communications and Q2 2026 enforcement trends, the policy is staying. The grey area around “AI-assisted” vs “AI-generated” is narrowing toward stricter disclosure, not looser. Plan for ongoing compliance, not a temporary policy.

Bottom line

Etsy’s January 2026 AI disclosure policy is straightforward in theory and strict in enforcement. Run the 5-step checklist above against every listing. Turn the AI flag on for any listing where you used AI. Change “Made by” to “Designed by.” Add a transparency sentence to the description. Use AI tools that handle the disclosure for you so you don’t miss the flag.

The Q1 2026 enforcement data shows that ~90% of removals were sellers who either didn’t know the policy existed or assumed background removal didn’t count. Knowing the rules is most of the compliance.
