The six image placements on an Amazon listing

Main image (MAIN)

1000 × 1000 minimum, 2000 × 2000+ recommended for zoom

Aspect: 1:1 (square required) · Background: Pure white (#FFFFFF), no shadows on backdrop · Product fill: 85% of frame minimum

Formats: JPG (preferred), TIFF, PNG, GIF (non-animated) · Max: 10 MB

No text, logos, watermarks, mannequins, props, accessories not included in sale, or borders. Product must be in-package or removed-from-package per category. Photographic (not illustrated/CGI/rendered) for most categories.

Additional images (PT01-PT08)

1000 × 1000 minimum

Aspect: 1:1 preferred, other ratios allowed · Background: Any (white, lifestyle, infographic, in-use) · Product fill: 80%+ recommended

Formats: JPG, PNG, GIF (non-animated) · Max: 10 MB

Up to 8 additional images. Lifestyle, props, text overlays, infographics, color/size variants all permitted. The marketing image lane — this is where AI-generated images shine.

A+ Content (premium content)

Per module template (970 × 600 hero, 300 × 300 thumb, etc.)

Aspect: Per module · Background: Any · Product fill: Per module

Formats: JPG, PNG · Max: Per module (typically 2 MB)

Brand-Registered sellers only. Modules include hero banner, image+text comparison, multi-image grids. The product detail page below the bullets — increases conversion 3-10% per Amazon's own data.

Brand Store images

The main image rules that cause listing suppression

Amazon\'s automated image checker rejects main images that violate these rules. A rejected main image suppresses your listing from search results — invisible until you fix and re-upload. The rules:

1. Pure white background

Hex #FFFFFF. Amazon checks the four corners of your image. Even 99% white (#FEFEFE) can trigger rejection. Use a true white backdrop or remove background via Pixelcut / Photoshop.

2. 85%+ product fill

Product must fill at least 85% of the frame. Small products centered in a sea of white space get rejected. Crop tight.

3. No text or graphics

No watermarks, logos, text overlays, badges, borders, or graphics on the main image. Amazon\'s OCR scanner catches text — including subtle brand watermarks. Move all text to additional images.

4. No props or accessories

Main image shows only the product being sold. A coffee mug with a saucer (not included) = rejected. Shoes with model legs = rejected. Move lifestyle context to additional images.

5. No mannequins (apparel exception)

Most categories: no mannequins. Apparel has an exception — invisible/ghost mannequin showing garment shape is allowed. Headless full mannequin is not.

6. Photographic, not illustrated

Most categories require photographic main images (real or AI-generated photoreal). Cartoon, vector, or obviously-CGI main images get rejected. Toys, art, and games have category-specific exceptions.

Frequently asked questions

What is the correct Amazon main image size in 2026?

Minimum 1000 × 1000 pixels (required for zoom function), recommended 2000 × 2000 or larger for retina display sharpness. Square aspect (1:1) is required for the main image; other aspect ratios get rejected by Amazon's automated image checker.

What are Amazon's strict main image rules?

Pure white background (hex #FFFFFF — Amazon's system literally checks the four corners are white). Product must fill 85%+ of the frame. No text, logos, watermarks, borders, mannequins, props, accessories not included in the sale, or color-shifted backgrounds. Photographic only (no illustrations, CGI, or AI obviously-generated for most categories). Violation = main image suppressed = listing hidden from search.

Can I use AI-generated images on Amazon?

Yes for additional images, A+ content, lifestyle, infographics, ads. The main image gets stricter scrutiny — Amazon's policy requires "accurate product representation". One real photo for the main image is the safe play; AI everywhere else (lifestyle, in-use, holiday seasonal, infographic variants).

What format should I upload — JPG, PNG, or TIFF?

JPG for almost everything (smaller files, faster page load = better conversion). PNG only when you need transparency, which Amazon doesn't support on the main image (must be white bg). TIFF preserves quality best for archive/master files but the upload caps at 10 MB, so most TIFFs won't fit.

My main image got rejected — what happened?

Most common causes (in order): (1) background isn't pure white at corners — even 99% white triggers rejection, (2) product fills less than 85% of frame, (3) text or watermark detected by Amazon's OCR scanner, (4) image is below 1000 × 1000, (5) wrong file format (animated GIF, HEIC). Fix the issue and re-upload — usually re-indexed within 24 hours.

How many product images should I upload per ASIN?

Minimum 4 (main + 3 additional). Recommended 7-9 to fill every slot. The order Amazon recommends: 1) main white bg, 2) hero lifestyle, 3) close-up detail, 4) in-use or scale, 5) infographic with key specs, 6) variants/sizes, 7) packaging, 8) what's-in-the-box, 9) brand story. More than 9 isn't allowed.

Does Amazon care about image SEO / alt text?

Amazon doesn't expose alt-text input for product images (unlike Google or Shopify). What Amazon DOES index: the image OCR (any text in your images becomes searchable), file metadata to a limited extent, and the surrounding product title + bullets + description. Lesson: put your most important keywords in the bullets, not as text overlays on your main image (which is forbidden anyway).

What size should A+ content images be?

Per module: hero banner 970 × 600, comparison cards 300 × 300 thumbs, full-width banner 1464 × 600. Amazon's A+ Manager shows exact per-module specs at upload time. Use JPG at quality 85-90; PNG only if you need transparency for icons.
